چکیده

dots the authors were also able to estimate the number of elongating Pol II complexes along the length of the MS2/lacZ transgene. These calculations suggest that there are approximately 30 elongating Pol II complexes distributed along the length of the transgene at maximal induction. This corresponds to a density of one Pol II complex every 150 basepairs, or one Pol II released from the promoter every six seconds. This is quite a high rate of RNA synthesis, given that the theoretical limit is approximately one Pol II complex every 70–80 basepairs due to the large size of the Pol II footprint. These studies are the harbingers of things to come: the visualization of time. We are getting the first glimpses into the dynamic activation of gene expression during development. There is no going back, and there is little doubt that these studies are ushering in a new era for the elucidation of temporal control, comparable to the insights gained into the spatial regulation of gene expression provided by the fixed in situ hybridization methods first introduced around 30 years ago [14–16]. At long last, the dynamic developing embryo is ready for its close-up.

Animal Communication: Hidden Complexity

A hallmark of human communication is vocal turn taking. Until recently, turn taking was thought to be unique to humans but new data indicate that marmosets, a new world monkey, take turns when vocalizing too.

The one-way communication complexity of the Boolean Hidden Matching Problem

We give a tight lower bound of Ω( √ n) for the randomized one-way communication complexity of the Boolean Hidden Matching Problem [BJK04]. Since there is a quantum one-way communication complexity protocol of O(log n) qubits for this problem, we obtain an exponential separation of quantum and classical one-way communication complexity for partial functions. A similar result was independently ob...

Epistemic view of quantum states and communication complexity of quantum channels

The communication complexity of a quantum channel is the minimal amount of classical communication required for classically simulating a process of state preparation, transmission through the channel and subsequent measurement. It establishes a limit on the power of quantum communication in terms of classical resources. We show that classical simulations employing a finite amount of communicati...

Monotone Rank and Separations in Computational Complexity

In the paper, we introduce the concept of monotone rank, and using it as a powerful tool, we obtain several important and strong separation results in computational complexity. – We show a super-exponential separation between monotone and non-monotone computation in the non-commutative model, and thus give the answer to a longstanding open problem posed by Nisan [Nis91] in algebraic complexity....

The Association between Patient-centered Hidden Curriculum and Medical Students’ Communication Skills

Introduction: Nowadays, physicians, medical organizations, and policy makers increasingly emphasize patient centered medical care. Regarding the importance of hidden curriculum in development of medical students’ professional behaviors, this study was conducted to investigate correlation between patient-centered hidden curriculum and medical students’ communication skills. Methods: This descri...

Tensor Norms and the Classical Communication Complexity of Nonlocal Quantum Measurement1

We initiate the study of quantifying nonlocalness of a bipartite measurement by the minimum amount of classical communication required to simulate the measurement. We derive general upper bounds, which are expressed in terms of certain tensor norms of the measurement operator. As applications, we show that (a) If the amount of communication is constant, quantum and classical communication proto...
